Index Panel Tasks

The Index panel, ActiveLinks tab allows you to perform tasks one link at a time, or on multiple links.

When you break links, these links are listed in the Index panel, Broken Links tab where you can perform tasks on these broken links.

Tasks for a Single Link

The Index panel, ActiveLinks tab includes a button and menu options that allow you to perform tasks on one link at a time, or on multiple links.

To the right of each link name is the Excel icon, as shown in the figure below.

Description

Launches Excel and opens the link's workbook.

Do one of the following to perform an action on a single Link:

  • Right-click a link to select the link. A menu of options appears.

  • Select the check box next to a link and click the Options icon . A menu of options appears.

    You can perform the following actions on one link. Click the appropriate option from the menu.

Refresh Link(s)

Refreshes the selected link. See Update a Link in Microsoft Word for details.

Reload Link

Reloads the selected link. See Update a Link in Microsoft Word for details.

Break Link(s)

Breaks the selected link. See Break a Link in Microsoft Word for details.

Delete Link(s)

Deletes the selected link. See Delete a Link in Microsoft Word for details.

View All Instances

Lists each instance of the selected link in the Index panel and the rest of the links added to Word are not listed in the Index panel. See View All Instances of a Link Added to Microsoft Word for details.

View Link Details

Opens a window containing detailed information about the link such when the link was created and last updated and the user who created and last updated the link, the link's location in Word, and the link's Excel file. See View the Details of a Link Added to Microsoft Word for details.

Note: This option is only available from the right-click menu. It is not available from the Options menu.

Edit Link Preferences

Displays the ActiveLinks - Preferences dialog box to update the link's formatting preferences. See Update the Formatting Preferences Applied to a Link Added to Word for details.

Update Excel Path

Change the path for the selected link. See Update the Path to a Link for details.

Note: You can also perform the following actions on multiple links: Refresh Link(s), Break Link(s), Delete Link(s), and Update Excel Path (refer to Tasks for Multiple Links).

Tasks for Multiple Links

To perform an action on multiple links, select the check box next to each link you want to perform the action on and then click the Options icon . A menu of options appears.

Note: The Edit Link Preferences option is only available when you select table links. The Edit Link Preferences option is not available when you only select item links or select both item and table links.

You can perform the following actions on multiple links:

Refresh Link(s)

Refreshes all selected links. See Update a Link in Microsoft Word for details.

Break Link(s)

Breaks all selected links. See Break a Link in Microsoft Word for details.

Delete Link(s)

Deletes all selected links. See Delete a Link in Microsoft Word for details.

View All Instances

Lists each instance of the selected links in the Index panel and the rest of the links added to Word are not listed in the Index panel. See View All Instances of a Link Added to Microsoft Word for details.

Update Excel Path

Lets you change the path to the Excel file for one or more selected links. See Update the Path to a Link for details.

Edit Link Preferences

Displays the ActiveLinks - Preferences dialog box to update the formatting preferences applied to the table links you selected. See Update the Formatting Preferences Applied to a Link Added to Word for details. This option is not available when you select multiple item links or select both item and table links.

Tasks for Broken Links

When you break links, these broken links are listed in the Index panel, Broken links tab.

Tasks for a single broken link

Do one of the following to perform an action on a single broken link.

  • Right-click a broken link. A menu of options appears.

  • Select the check box next to a broken link and click the Options icon . A menu of options appears.

Restore Link

Restores the broken link to an active link to reestablish the link's connection between Word and Excel. See Restore a Broken Link in Microsoft Word for details.

Delete Link(s)

Deletes the selected link. See Delete a Link in Microsoft Word for details.

Tasks for multiple broken links

Do the following to delete multiple broken links:

  • Select the check box next to each broken link you want to delete and click the Options icon . The Delete Link(s) option appears.
