Restore a Broken Link in Microsoft Word

After you break a link, you can restore the link later if necessary to reestablish the link's connection between Excel and Word. You can do this if you modify content in Excel that is linked to a broken link in Word and you want to update this link with the latest content.

Broken links in the Word document are listed in the Index panel, Broken Links tab. Use the Broken Links tab to restore broken links.

Note: If the message "Broken on and by information is not available for this link." displays below a broken link, you cannot restore this link. A link that displays this message below the link was broken prior to the support for restoring broken links (February 18, 2018 release (2.5.4.2800)) and therefore the metadata required to restore the broken link is not available. To restore these links, you'll need to delete the link and then add the link again to Word.

Note: You cannot use the Break Link button in the ActiveLink ribbon to restore a broken link. To restore a broken link, use the Index panel.

For more information about restoring broken links, see the following sections:

Visual Cue to Denote Broken Links in a Document

To identify whether a link in a document is active or broken, look at the link identifier at the top of the link.

For broken links

After a link is broken, the title in the link identifier for a disabled link begins with 'xAL', as shown in the figure below. The link is also listed in the Index panel, Broken Links tab.

For active links

For active links, the title begins with 'AL', as shown in the figure below. The link is also listed in the Index panel, ActiveLinks tab.
