The Narrative Content Repair Tool

The Narrative Content Repair tool is a component of the Refresh Link operation in ActiveLink. The Narrative Content Repair tool is a required part of updating Excel-to-Word Item links that meet the following conditions:

  • An Excel Item link that has the Paragraph formatting category applied to the link is added to Word using ActiveLink.
  • In Word, XBRL narrative content tagging (level 4) is applied to data in the paragraph using the ActiveDisclosure Word add-in.
  • After tagging the data in Word, some or all of the tagged data is modified in Excel.

Under these conditions, running the Refresh Link operation from the toolbar in the ActiveLink Word add-in launches the Narrative Content Repair tool.

Note: When you tag data with XBRL using the ActiveDisclosure Word add-in, a Word content control is assigned to the tagged data. The content control includes information about the location of the data, the data's numeric and textual make-up, and XBRL information that has been applied to the data. After you modify the data in Excel after that data has been tagged with XBRL in Word, ActiveLink detects that the modified data no longer matches the data in the content control and attempts to automatically repair narrative tagging. Using the Narrative Content Repair tool, you can manually reassign the content control to the modified data when ActiveLink could not automatically repair the XBRL tagging.

Perform the following procedure after you tag narrative content in Word using level 4 tagging and then modify the source file in Excel. Any data included in the narrative content that has been modified in Excel is presented for repair.

  1. In Word, select the paragraph that includes the narrative content and click Refresh Link from the ActiveLink ribbon.
  2. Any items that appear on the Refresh Links page with the symbol in the State column must be manually repaired.
  3. Click Fix Issues and the Repair Embedded Content window is displayed.

  4. The top section in the Repair Embedded Content window lists each occurrence in the paragraph that must be repaired. These are the items that have been modified in the Excel file since tagging was performed in Word.

    The following columns are included:

    • ActiveLink Table: Lists the name of the Excel file linked to the Word file.
    • Table Cell Value with Embedded Content: The value in the narrative content in Word that has been changed in Excel.
    • Status: The number of items that must be repaired and the status of those items.
    • Click the button to open the Excel file that contains the changes.

The bottom portion of the window includes three panes:

    • The Cell Contents Before Refresh pane includes the item as it appears in Word.  Each changed entry is highlighted.
    • The Repair Embedded Content pane includes the data in its changed state in Excel (the new value for the data).
    • The Embedded Content Items pane includes the tools you will use to perform the content repair. It also includes a Comments field which can be used to embed comments in the Word document.

To repair a narrative value

  1. Under the Repair Embedded Content pane, select the first item in the list.
  2. At the bottom of the window, under Reapply Embedded Items, select the data to be changed. Be sure to select only the characters that are highlighted in the Cell Contents Before Refresh pane.
  3. When you select the value to repair, be sure to include any signs or labels.

  4. Click the under the Actions column in the Embedded Content Items pane. The changes to . This signifies that the item has been repaired.
  5. For embedded items that include multiple repairs for a single item, you must re-select the item under the Reapply Embedded Items pane, and then, click the for the second occurrence listed under the Embedded Content Items pane.
  6. Note: Multiple repairs may be required for a single value in a paragraph. This is the case when the paragraph in Word includes multiple reporting periods. You must repair the narrative value for each of the reporting periods.

  7. To undo the selection (if, for example, if you selected the wrong value), click the under the Actions column in the Embedded Content Items pane. This removes the highlighting. You can then select the appropriate value to include.
  8. To add a comment to the Word document, type the comment in the comment field and press Enter. This adds a Word comment to the document. The comments are visible in the Word document when you exit the Repair Embedded Content window.
  9. After you have addressed all items in the Repair Embedded Content pane, click Apply.
  10. This saves the repairs to the narrative values and updates the content controls in Word for all repaired content.
